Capirona — Calycophyllum spruceanum
(cap-e-ro-na)
There are times when we feel overly sensitive to the energies around us — from people, environments, or even our own swirling emotions. In these moments, Capirona offers its radiant, protective light. The spirit of this tree lifts and brightens heavy moods, wrapping you in a shield of calm vitality. Known for its smooth, luminous bark, Capirona teaches us to let negative energies slide away — just as its bark naturally sheds, leaving a fresh and shining surface beneath. The colour connected to this essence is lime green, mirroring the bark’s vibrant hue — a refreshing, invigorating shade that awakens and renews.
Each essence is prepared with its own medicine song, an icaro — the shaman’s channel to the spirit world. Through song, the healing intention is set, and the unique qualities of the tree are called forth into the water, carrying its medicine into the essence.
Other traditional uses
Capirona grows tall into the rainforest canopy, reaching up to 30 metres, often in small groves. Its bark changes from vivid green to warm brown through the seasons, and its fragrant white flowers perfume the air. Used traditionally by the Kichwa, Kukama, and Tikuna peoples, the bark cleanses wounds, soothes burns, and treats skin conditions thanks to its antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. It is also known for rejuvenating the skin, much like the tree renews its own bark, and has been valued in cosmetic preparations for reducing wrinkles, scars, and discolouration. An antioxidant and natural insect repellent, Capirona has also been used to treat patchy skin and as a preventative for premature ageing.
Its exceptionally hard, durable timber is prized in the Amazon for construction and furniture making. This sacred teacher plant holds both protective and restorative power, used by shamans for its spiritual and curative qualities — either within a dieta or as an admixture to Ayahuasca.
